The Context

The students enrolled to all faculties are from socio-economically backward families Most of the students are from such families, where there is impact of superstitions, illiteracy and low income. The main source of their income is agriculture which is totally dependent on nature. Many of the times they face natural calamities. The students have to work in their agriculture land to support their families, sometimes they have to migrate for work, this is one of the chief reasons for less attendance of the students in the college.

The Practice

Considering the less attendance of the students in the college, it is decided to introduce Student Adoption Scheme. Through this scheme the students in the college were allotted among the faculty of Arts, Commerce, and Science. All the teachers were provided with formats for collection of data like cast, category, family income, family members and their education qualification, their professions, the land holding of the family, the type of land etc. After counseling of the students, the faculty noticed that the students are from poor families, so they have the financial problems, some are having the transportation problems. The faculties submit their reports of allotted students to the Head of the Student’s Adoption Scheme. As per the need of the students they were provided the support and help in the form of two times meals in a day, financial help provided to B.Com. students. The faculty of the college continuously engaged to help & support the adopted students by providing them books, notes, study material and encourage themabout the importance of the higher education. The faculty is in continuous touch with the adopted students for their internal assessments, semester examinations and the University examinations. They are informed about the college activities time to time. The Head of the committee keeps the record of the reports submitted by the faculty, twice in a year.

Outcomes of the Scheme

The implementation of the best practice “Students Adoption Scheme” brought many remarkable changes among the students. Adopted students, after counseling there found changes. The faculty have personally provided help, personal & educational counseling and encouraged them. As a result of this, the students scored good marks in the University examinations and are also saved from dropout and their attendance in the college was improved. The commerce faculty students were advised for the P.G. courses and they are now working in private jobs in micro finances, as agricultural assistants, working in private companies, data entry operators, got success in competitive exams. All the students get benefited by “Students Adoption Scheme” through continuous counseling, financial help and suggestions. This scheme helped in the overall development of the students.
